The Kanchipuram 15 Divya Desam Yatra is a sacred Sri Vaishnava pilgrimage covering the most revered Divya Desams in and around Kanchipuram, the ancient city known as “City of 1000 Temples (ஆயிரம் கோயில்களின் நகரம்) ”. These temples are glorified by the Azhwars in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham and are deeply associated with Sri Ramanujacharya and Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya.
Brahma’s Thousandfold Desire
Lord Brahma once felt a deep desire to perform a thousand Aswamedha Yajnas, but time was against him. Scanning the universe he had created under Narayana’s command; he discovered a sacred hillock named Thiruvahendrapuram in the Satyavratakshetram—a place where even a single good deed bore the fruit of a thousand! Brahma decided to perform his great yajna here.
The Dilemma of Saraswati’s Absence
At that moment, his consort Saraswati was occupied and could not assist him. According to the Shastras, any fire ritual must be performed by a Grihasta with his wife present. Brahma, ever clever, had a backup plan: he invited his other wife, Savitri, to perform the yajna alongside him.
Saraswati’s Wrath and Obstacles
Saraswati, infuriated, unleashed obstacles to ruin the ceremony. Ghosts, ghouls, an asura who swallowed all light, Kali, intoxicated elephants, and even herself as the raging river Veghavati tried to stop Brahma. But the Lord, taking various divine forms— including a dam to block the river—overcame each challenge.
The Birth of Devaraja Perumal
Finally, as the yajna reached its peak, the divine fruit manifested as Devaraja Perumal.
The Azhwars and Vyakhyatas capture this moment with the phrase: “Pagalon Pagal Vilakkaga”—meaning, the brilliance of the Lord emerging from the Yajna Kunda made the Sun itself seem like a mere lamp lit in broad daylight! Such is the glory of Devaraja, the supreme Lord of all demigods.
Divya Desams of Kanchipuram
In Kanchipuram alone, there are 15 Divya Desams where the Lord played a crucial role in this divine charitram. Some of them include:

Near Kanchi lies the birthplace of the great polymath, polyglot, poet, and Visishtadvaita philosopher, Nigamantha Desika. Even today, Kanchipuram stands as a living tapestry of many Sampradayas, intertwined to form a fortress of Sanatana Dharma, echoing centuries of spiritual wisdom and (kind of ) harmony.
